Critical Issues in Feminist Political Thought and Action

Between July 4 – 6, 2011, a group of feminist thinkers and practitioners met to identify and discuss critical issues in current feminist political thought and action in Poland. The group has gathered to address the growing concern over the strengthening of neo-liberal policies and attitudes that are detrimental to civil rights of people in this country. The debates were wide-ranging and plans were made:

  • to work together to strengthen communication structures among feminist; groups and gender studies faculties in a number of locations across Poland;
  • to cooperate more closely and plan collective actions to counteract growing backlash against feminist agenda (e.g. anti-abortion legislation, anti-divorce legislation initiative);
  • to share and develop feminist pedagogies in all areas of education (formal, informal, non-formal);
  • to develop and disseminate (publish) research and activities informed by feminist theories and methodologies using a variety of media;
  • to strengthen the exchanges between academia and activism and to reflect on the interconnectedness of feminist thought and action;
  • to spread the idea that feminism is a social-justice movement and to incorporate the feminist agenda in other progressive activism in Poland;
  • to include post-colonial and geopolitical perspectives, migration and trans-border issues, geo-economic processes in our work;
  • to include issues of the intersections of gender, non-normative sexuality, class, nationality, ethnicity, age, disability in our work.

The group intends to continue working together and to develop new knowledge and actions in all these areas.
